Welcome to DowneU3A. New members are very welcome, just check the calendar
for our next monthly meeting (Monday 28th May at 10am in Downpatrick Golf Club) and come
along. There will be a speaker (Averil Milligan, the head gardener at Rowallane),
tea/coffee, followed by a meeting when we make plans for the autumn, then optional
soup and a roll.
The U3A works through small interest groups, so check the list of groups on the right hand side to see what you might enjoy (click each title
for more details). If your special
interest is not there come along and find others with similar ideas. We have recently
started new groups -- concerts, daytime bridge, music and hill walking -- and others will
emerge as new members join. For more information e-mail info@downeu3a.eu
, leave a phone number and we will contact you.
What is a U3A?U3A stands for University of the Third
Age. It is a collective of older people which enables members to share many educational, creative and
leisure activities. Anyone in the Third Age can join a U3A provided they are no longer in full time
employment. There are currently more than 760 U3As in the UK with over 250,000 members, 20 in Northern Ireland
with around 5,000 members. For an idea of what U3As are about check an Australian video on

To mark the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Downe U3A
William Devlin, who founded the group in Downpatrick planted an Irish oak tree along with John
Ward (assistant greenkeeper) in the grounds of the Downpatrick Golf Club. The Golf Club has been
hosting general and group meeting of the Downe U3A for much of it's existence. Included in the
picture are U3A club members Billy Curran, Nuala McAleenan (current Chair), Paddy Killen
and Brenda O'Connor

Downe U3A Downe U3A was started 5 years ago by William Devlin and has grown to 160 members -- check the photo
gallery to see who you know.
There is a monthly meeting, in Downpatrick Golf Club, generally on the last Monday of each month,
with a guest speaker followed by a discussion of the events being planned. Most of these groups
have between 10 and 20 members and new members soon get to know a wide group of people with
similar interests. Many of the documents on the site are in Portable Document Format. If you do not have a PDF reader installed one can be downloaded free from [ Adobe Reader]
