Art ExhibitionMaggie and Brenda are arranging an art show at Castleward on 14th to 19th July
to showcase local artists. Your work is requested. Note that entry to Castleward will be free in the
evenings so come along on the 14th.
Theatre TripFor the theatre trip to "Importance of Being Earnest" on June 5th(Tuesday) at
the Lyric Theatre the arrangements are: Public Transport to Belfast (There is a Public Holiday timetable
but the buses @ 4.30 and 5.30pm should allow plenty of time for a meal and show. A Community Bus will
pick you up at the theatre and return to Downpatrick Bus Station. Those interested should contact
Nuala by e-mail at Macaleenan@btinternet.com or text her on 07801526683. Theatre tickets cost
£18 and return transport approx £3.
Irish history CourseThere is an 8 week history course (free) running in the Down Museum
covering Irish history 1901--1925. There are places still available, Tuesdays 10.30-12.30.
It started on Tuesday 1st but still possible to join. Contact Linda Mc Kenna in the Museum.
Summer Outing - History of Gullion Guided Bus TourThere will be a summer outing involving a guided coach tour of the
Ring O' Gullion in South Armagh. This has been booked with Newry Tourist Office for Tuesday
29th May and Thursday 7th June. Each day the tour will start at 11am beside the bus station. Then a 29 seater bus will go on a tour of historic
sites with information provided by a guide. There will be a break for lunch in Crossmaglen
and we will be back in Newry for a break in the Canal Court and then to catch the 6 o'clock bus back to Newcastle/ Downpatrick. Cost will be
£10 for bus and guide plus optional lunch (£6 for finger buffet). The bus for the 29th is fully booked but there are still 6

Northern Ireland Regional U3AAt the Spring Meeting of the NI Regional U3A Committee it was
announced that: There are now 20 different U3As in Northern ireland with around 5,000
members. William Devlin has arranged an agreement between Libraries NI and U3A NI Region whereby
use of library facilities, where available, will be free of charge to U3As. The region has
arranged a link with Volunteer Now who may contact U3As for help with specific projects. Erne
U3A will be hosting a choir fest on 17th October Interested U3As should access the John Hewitt
Society website for ongoing eventsMaeve Gallagher of Shimna U3A is the new Chairman of the
Regional Committee and Sheila Magee of Downe is the new Secretary.
Golf DayDowne hosted a successful inter-U3A Golf Day for U3A members and guests when,
despite gloomy forecasts, the sun shone gloriously for 44 golfers from Belfast, Kilkeel and Newry
as well as Downe. The visitors were very appreciative of the state of the course and the
quality and value of the food. Congratulations to the winners:

Art Exhibition The annual Art Exhibition by Inch Art Group is being held on
Saturday 28th April from 10am to 4pm in Inch Church Hall, Downpatrick (on the main road between
Downpatrick and Crossgar). Entrance fee: £3 which includes refreshments; Children under 12 free.
The chosen charity: Kidney Research.
Uzbekistan BooksThe books which Helen referred to in her talk were "Murder in Samarkand"
by Craig Murray and "A Carpet Ride to Khiva" by Christopher Aslan Alexander.
Anniversary

To mark the 5th anniversary of the founding of the Downe U3A
William Devlin, who founded the group in Downpatrick planted an Irish oak tree along with John
Ward (assistant greenkeeper) in the grounds of the Downpatrick Golf Club. The Golf club has been
hosting general and group meeting of the Downe U3A for much of it's existence.

U3A Summer SchoolsEvery year there are a couple of U3A residential summer schools,
one held in Telford (near Shrewsbury)and the other in Cirencester. Topics are:

Free concertsThe Ulster Orchestra has arranged a system whereby those aged 70 or over
living alone in rural areas (that includes Downpatrick) can be collected from their home by Down
Community Transport and driven to Belfast for selected Ulster Orchestra concerts, then driven back
home again. There are at least 3 more such opportunities coming up. To make use of this you should
contact Shane or Lydia on 028 9023 9955. They will send an application form, then make all the
arrangements. Thanks to Marion for information on this.

NI Regional U3AsThere are currently 20 U3As in Northern Ireland, all very
different in character, the most recent just started in Comber. The regional website has recently been modernised and is now
available at Northern Ireland U3A. It includes a
periodic newsletter and links to other U3A websites.
Resources for GroupsYou should recently have received a copy of the "Third Age Matters"
(previously "U3A News"). We get these because we are part of a nation-wide organisation with over 270,000
members and you can learn more about it at National U3A. If
you follow the links and register as a member you get access to a lot of useful information on
the members' page including access to the Resource Centre.
